In a strategic move to strengthen its organisational roots and ideological foundation in Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday appointed senior leader N Ramchander Rao as the new State President, replacing Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, the party announced in an official release.
Rao, a veteran of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and a respected legal professional, is expected to infuse the state unit with a renewed focus on grassroots mobilisation and ideological clarity.
Described as a courageous student leader who rose to prominence during the 1970s and 1980s at Osmania University, Ramchander Rao gained recognition for challenging Leftist dominance and Naxalite influence in campus politics. Despite facing violent attacks—including one that left him hospitalised—he remained steadfast in his advocacy for nationalist values.
Coming from a modest Brahmin family rooted in academia, Rao pursued law and public service with equal dedication. His legal career began in 1986 at the Nampally Criminal Courts and eventually expanded to the Andhra Pradesh High Court and the Supreme Court. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2012 and is widely regarded for his legal expertise and integrity.
Rao has held numerous key positions within the BJP, including:
- Secretary of BJYM
- Vice President of BJP Hyderabad
- State Convenor and National Member of BJP Legal Cell
- General Secretary and Spokesperson for the State Unit
He also served as a Member of the Telangana Legislative Council (2015) representing the graduates’ constituency of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Mahbubnagar.
According to the BJP’s statement, Rao’s appointment signals the party’s intent to prioritise commitment, ideological grounding, and organisational discipline over political flamboyance. While some have labelled him a “low-profile” choice, party insiders and senior leaders view him as a unifying force who combines legal acumen with deep grassroots experience.
“The party values commitment over charisma, substance over spectacle,” the release said, stressing that Rao’s elevation has been welcomed across party ranks.
The BJP’s Telangana unit thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Party President JP Nadda for the appointment, expressing confidence that under Ramchander Rao’s leadership, the party will achieve new milestones and expand its outreach in the state.
With Rao at the helm, the BJP is gearing up to strengthen its presence in Telangana and prepare for upcoming electoral challenges with renewed focus and organisational discipline.
